FATAL PEDESTRIAN COLLISION 300 BLOCK OF EAST FORT LOWELL ROAD |
Early this morning, just after 1:00 a.m., officers from Operations Division West responded to a report of a collision involving a pedestrian in the 300 block of East Fort Lowell Road. Tucson Fire Department medics also responded to the collision and evaluated the parties involved. The pedestrian, identified as 44-year-old Eugene Anthony Nieto, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Mr. Nieto’s next of kin was notified. The driver of the vehicle, a 2019 Hyundai Elantra, was not injured and remained at the scene. TPD Traffic Detectives were advised and took control of the investigation.
Interviews conducted by officers and detectives in conjunction with roadway evidence indicated that Mr. Nieto attempted to cross Fort Lowell Road approximately 150 feet east of a High Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) signal. The Hyundai, driven by a 41-year-old male, was traveling eastbound in the median lane on Fort Lowell when it struck Mr. Nieto. The driver immediately stopped after the crash and called 9-1-1. Investigators determined that the driver was not impaired at the time of the collision. Any impairment within Mr. Nieto may be determined through medical records. Midblock crossing by the pedestrian was identified as the primary factor in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
