CITY RECEIVES NEARLY $5 MILLION IN INITIAL PFAS SETTLEMENT - The City of Tucson recently received $4.8 million from 2018 nationwide litigation against the manufacturers of per-and-polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) products for use as Aqueous Film Forming Foam. The City expects to receive nearly $30 million over the coming years based on terms of the settlement and will continue other efforts to recover funds from responsible parties to address the financial impacts of PFAS contamination in Tucson, which has had a significant impact on groundwater supplies. While Tucson Water works to ensure that our drinking water meets or exceeds all federal, state, and local drinking water regulations, the City had to shut down nearly 40 drinking water production wells over the past decade and incurred tens of millions of dollars in related costs to contain and begin addressing PFAS contamination. Tucson Water is currently constructing advanced water treatment facilities to help restore and safely bring some of the affected wells back into service. Read the news release

CITY'S HOUSING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT RESPONDS TO NEED OF HOUSING JOB CORPS YOUTH IN TUCSON - The City of Tucson’s Housing and Community Development Department (HCD) acted quickly last month to support youth at risk of homelessness, following the announced closure of the Fred G. Acosta Job Corps Center. HCD teams collaborated to provide stable housing for 12 young people, offering furnished apartments and essential amenities, including a two-bedroom unit for a mother and her child. This coordinated response highlights the impact of local efforts to prevent youth homelessness. “The latest (Tucson Pima Collaboration to End Homelessness) TPCH data shows that City of Tucson investments serving youth who are experiencing homelessness are working," said Tucson Mayor Regina Romero. "It has decreased by 32% over the last three years. This data reflects what we have known all along: that bringing people into shelter creates stability.” According to recent data, youth homelessness in Pima County has decreased by 32% since 2022, reflecting the success of these strategies. Still, with around 240 youth currently waiting for housing, the need for affordable options remains critical. Read more
