On June 25, 2025, at approximately 8:30 p.m., officers from Operations Division East responded to a report of a collision involving a bicyclist in the 8700 block of East Old Vail Road. Tucson Fire Department personnel also responded to the scene and provided aid to those involved. The bicyclist, identified as a 75-year-old male, was transported by TFD to St. Joseph’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of a silver 2005 Toyota RAV4, a 34-year-old male, was not injured.
Based on interviews, roadway evidence and dash camera footage, officers determined that the bicyclist was riding westbound on the paved shoulder of Old Vail Road. The RAV4 was also traveling westbound in the curb lane. As the RAV4 approached the bicyclist, the driver merged left into the median lane. At that point, the bicyclist turned left across the westbound lanes, directly into the path of the RAV4. The cyclist was struck by the RAV4 broadside. The driver of the RAV4 immediately stopped after the collision and cooperated with the investigation. Police were later informed that the bicyclist’s injuries were no longer considered life-threatening. Unsafe vehicle movement by the bicyclist was listed as the major contributing factor of the crash and no citations were issued.
On July 7, 2025, the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner notified TPD that the bicyclist had passed away from the injuries he sustained. The bicyclist was identified as 75-year-old Steven Raynor Bye. His family was aware of his condition and subsequent passing.
