A Newsletter from the Council Member
Dear Friends,
As we head into July, I want to take a moment to wish you a joyful and safe Fourth of July holiday. Whether you're watching fireworks light up “A” Mountain or cooling off at a city pool or splash pad, I hope you find time to rest and celebrate going into the weekend!
This time of year also marks the start of our monsoon season—bringing much-needed rain, but also serious safety concerns. Please remember to drive cautiously, never cross flooded roads, and keep in mind Arizona’s “Stupid Motorist Law” (ARS 28-910), which can hold drivers responsible for rescue costs if they ignore posted warnings. To help you prepare, the City’s Operation Splash program offers up to 10 free sandbags per vehicle at the east parking lot of Hi Corbett Field. Just bring a shovel—and a neighbor, if you can lend a hand.
Looking ahead, our Ward 5 Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway at the El Pueblo Activity Center is right around the corner, in addition to a similar occasion at Quincie Douglas. We’re proud to continue this tradition of investing in young people and their families—making sure every student has what they need to start the school year strong.
Whether you're celebrating the Fourth, preparing for the rains, or gearing up for the school year ahead, I’m wishing you and your loved ones a safe, fun, and fulfilling summer.
Warmly,
Rocque Perez Ward5@tucsonaz.gov
City of Tucson's 28th Annual 4th of July Fireworks Celebration
Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Desert Diamond Casino & Entertainment, an enterprise of the Tohono O'odham Nation, Tucson’s annual fireworks display will return to “A” Mountain/Sentinel Peak Park on Friday, July 4 at 9 p.m., weather permitting.
Free public viewing will be available starting at 7 p.m. from TCC Parking Lot B, located on the west side of the Tucson Convention Center, with access from Cushing Street and Granada Avenue. Food trucks will be on-site for the celebration.
Additional free viewing will be available at the City-State Garage (498 W. Congress), which opens at 6 p.m. Please note tailgating, cooking, grilling, or barbecuing is not permitted in any of the City or TCC parking garages.
The Tucson Fire Department and Tucson Water will once again soak down vegetation on and around “A” Mountain in advance of the show and will remain on-site during and after the event to ensure fire safety.
For ADA-related accommodations at the TCC viewing area, call (520) 791-4101. For information on road closures and transit schedules, read more.
Keep Your Pets Safe This 4th of July
The Fourth of July can be a stressful time for our furry friends. Loud fireworks often frighten dogs, and the days following the holiday typically bring an influx of lost pets to the Pima Animal Care Center (PACC)—with 250 to 300 dogs taken in after Independence Day alone.
Here’s how you can help keep pets safe and support our local shelter:
- Keep pets indoors during fireworks, and make sure they are microchipped and wearing ID tags in case they get out.
- Foster a large dog (40 lbs or more) and receive a $5/day stipend (up to 14 days), thanks to Friends of PACC. This helps free up much-needed kennel space.
- Attend the “Stars, Stripes, and Stories” event on July 4, where community members are invited to read to shelter dogs to help soothe them during the noise.
- Adopt a dog for free! PACC is waiving adoption fees to help more pets find loving homes.
To see available pets, sign up to foster, or learn more about services and events, visit the PACC website.

Mosaic Quarter’s Iceplex and Field House Begin to Take Shape
Construction is advancing on the 175,000-square-foot Iceplex at Mosaic Quarter, a premier sports and entertainment destination taking shape near I-10 and Kino Parkway.
The Iceplex will include three full-size ice rinks designed for community hockey, figure skating, and other ice sports, along with a variety of amenities to serve athletes, families, and visitors. The Iceplex is one of the anchor projects of Phase I at Mosaic Quarter. Also underway is the MQ Field House, a 131,000-square-foot indoor sports complex featuring two levels of athletic space—each level approximately 25% larger than the playing surface at Arizona Stadium. The Field House will accommodate a wide range of sports thanks to flexible, interchangeable wood and turf flooring systems.
A central utility plant and on-site solar energy will power the complex, highlighting Mosaic Quarter’s strong commitment to innovation, sustainability, and long-term community benefit.
