MAYOR AND COUNCIL APPROVES ORDINANCES PROHIBITING CAMPING IN WASHES AND PARKS - In order to conform with state law and shield the City of Tucson from future lawsuits, Mayor and Council last night, June 17, approved amendments to Tucson Code making it illegal to camp in washes, watercourses, and parks. Arizona voters recently approved Proposition 312, which allows a property owner to apply for a reimbursement once per year for documented, reasonable expenses incurred when a city, county, or town does not enforce existing laws prohibiting illegal camping, obstructing a public thoroughfare, loitering, panhandling, and many other things. City Attorney Mike Rankin previously advised Mayor and Council to bring forward appropriate Code amendments that would put the City in a better position to avoid or defeat claims filed by property owners under Proposition 312. Rankin revised the definition of a "wash" to add a clarification that the term includes a culvert or similar improvement located within a wash. Watch the item Read agenda materials (item 12)
FORMER CITY MANAGER MICHAEL ORTEGA TO LEAD THE REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY - Less than two weeks after firing their former executive director, the board of the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) voted to hire former Tucson City Manager Michael Ortega to lead the RTA and Pima Association of Governments (PAG) on an interim basis. Ortega replaces Farhad Moghimi, who was fired in early June. The current half-cent RTA sales tax will expire in the middle of 2026 if it is not renewed by voters. The RTA Next plan could be sent to voters next March, if Pima County Supervisors vote in September to call the election. From the Tucson Sentinel
