On June 9, 2025, around 2:45 p.m., the Tucson Police Department responded to a report of a serious-injury collision involving a motorcyclist near South Alvernon Way and East Benson Highway. Tucson Fire Department personnel also responded to the crash and evaluated the parties involved. The motorcyclist was transported to Banner University Medical Center by TFD where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival. He was identified as 63-year-old Frank David Campa. The driver of the other vehicle, a Kenworth dump truck, was not injured. Traffic investigators were called to the scene and continued the investigation.
Through their investigation, detectives learned that the dump truck was stopped in the curb lane for the westbound red light on Benson Highway at Alvernon Way. It was the lead vehicle at the light, with several other vehicles stopped behind it. The motorcyclist, Mr. Campa, was also traveling westbound on Benson Highway. As he approached the intersection, he passed the line of stopped vehicles by riding on the shoulder to their right, eventually positioning himself next to the dump truck at the front of the line. When the light turned green, the dump truck began making a right turn onto northbound Alvernon Way, striking Mr. Campa. It is currently unknown whether Mr. Campa was attempting to continue westbound on Benson Highway ahead of traffic or if he was also trying to turn right onto Alvernon Way.
An officer from the DUI Unit responded to the scene and evaluated the driver of the dump truck for impairment. It was determined that the driver, identified as a 40-year-old male, was not impaired at the time of the collision. Any impairment within Mr. Campa may be determined through medical records. Unsafe overtaking on the right by the motorcyclist is the known contributing factor of the crash. Mr. Campa’s family was notified of his passing and the investigation remains ongoing.
