Maintaining Landscapes When It's Hot and Dry

I’ve heard summer temperatures might be above average again. I’m doing my best to conserve water, but I worry about my plants surviving in the heat. What should I do? 

The short answer is, water your plants—wisely! As the days get longer and warmer, we seek places for us and our pets to cool off. But landscape plants can’t move indoors and must endure these hot temperatures. During periods of extreme heat and little or no rain, watering your trees and plants according to an appropriate summer watering schedule is key to keeping soil moist so roots can uptake water and nutrients to keep plants healthy. On our website, Tucson Water offers monthly watering guidelines based on University of Arizona research and expertise from our Zanjeros (conservation specialists). These guidelines can help protect your plants while avoiding over-watering and saving water and money. If the heat and dryness are making you consider changes to your landscape, our website also features guides on choosing the right native and desert-adapted plants. 

Plants, and especially trees, are an investment that helps create a healthy, livable, and resilient community. In fact, Tucson’s just-completed inventory of trees on City property (about 83,000 of them) estimates their replacement value at $134 million—that’s $1,600 per tree! This value is based on trees’ role in saving energy, taking up air and water pollutants, reducing stormwater runoff, and storing carbon. The benefits go far beyond these; diverse landscapes are also visually appealing and offer habitat for wildlife. Trees have even been shown to increase retail sales in shopping districts and improve healing when located outside hospital patients’ windows.

These hot, dry months are an important time to protect these “green investments” by watering wisely. Decades of responsible water use mean that Tucson has the water to keep our urban forest green.

How is My Sewer Bill Calculated?

Sewer bills are based on average water usage, determined by using the months that typically see the lowest water use: December, January and February.

If these are not your lowest consecutive months of water usage, you may appeal your sewer bill within 60 days of receiving it. Call 520-724-6609 or click the link below.
