CITY OF TUCSON OPENS COOLING CENTERS FOR EXTREME SUMMER HEAT RELIEF
From Sunday, June 1, to Sunday, August 31, the City of Tucson will operate cooling centers in each Ward to provide temporary designated areas for the public to utilize and escape the heat during peak hours. All cooling centers in the City of Tucson are located along Sun Tran bus routes, ensuring they remain accessible to keep vulnerable Tucsonans safe from extreme heat.
The six City-operated cooling centers will be open daily from noon – 4 p.m., including holidays observed on Thursday, June 19 (Juneteenth), and Friday, July 4 (Independence Day).

“Extreme heat is no longer just a summer problem,” said City of Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, “Through our network of cooling centers we are protecting residents from the impacts of extreme heat in Tucson, especially older adults, children, and people experiencing homelessness. This is another way that the City of Tucson is actively preparing for heatwaves and potential blackouts by providing critical shelter.”
In May, City of Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, Pima County and the University of Arizona recognized Heat Week from May 5 –9, to raise awareness of the dangers of extreme heat and strengthen and coordinate collaboration.
In addition to the City of Tucson’s cooling centers, there are 23 Pima County libraries available for individuals to cool off and heat respite resources for people experiencing unsheltered homelessness.
The Pima Medical Examiner’s Office recorded 146 heat-related deaths between April and October in 2024. Heat-related includes deaths where environmental exposure to heat is either the primary cause of death or a significant contributing factor.
