FIFTH STREET/SIXTH STREET CAMPBELL AVENUE TO ALVERNON WAY
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY AND WALKABILITY PROJECT START
Beginning Monday, June 2, 2025, The City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) is scheduled to begin improvements along Sixth Street from Campbell Avenue to Country Club Road as part of the Prop 407 Tucson Delivers Strong Connections Pedestrian Safety and Walkability Improvement Project.
This project will enhance safety along Sixth Street from Campbell Avenue to Country Club Road and Fifth Street from Country Club Road to Alvernon Way by providing ADA-compliant ramps, complete and connected sidewalks on both sides of the road, enhanced street crossings, street lighting, green storm infrastructure and landscaping for shade.
Crews are scheduled to conduct work in this segment of the project for about six months. Following the completion of improvements from Campbell Avenue to Country Club Road, crews will shift to the eastern segment of the project and begin the same improvements from Country Club Road to Alvernon Way.
Work is scheduled to take place from about 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. For the safety of the crews during the project, travel will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
Storm to Shade is upgrading the existing traffic triangle at Country Club Road with a series of water harvesting basins (totaling 19,000 sf). The basins will collect streetside runoff to be utilized as an irrigation resource for 21 new native shade trees and a dense understory of shrubs and bunch grasses. This will help to shade the site for transit riders and create wildlife habitat for birds, bees, and other pollinators.
This walkability project is being done in conjunction with the waterline replacement project that is currently taking place. Following the replacement of the water line, the roadway will be reconstructed from Country Club Road to Wilmot Road.
