On May 10, 2025, at approximately 5:00 p.m., patrol officers from Operations Division South and personnel from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the intersection of South Sixth Avenue and Westbound I-10 Frontage Road regarding a report of an injury collision involving a bicyclist. When officers arrived, they immediately began rendering first aid to the bicyclist using their Individual First Aid Kits (IFAK) until TFD arrived. TFD transported the bicyclist to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Traffic Detectives, Crime Scene Unit, and an officer from the Impaired Driving Enforcement Unit responded to continue the investigation.
Roadway and video evidence, along with witness statements, indicated that the bicyclist was riding southbound on Sixth Avenue near the curb at the Westbound I-10 Frontage Road intersection. The bicyclist failed to stop at the red light, entered the intersection, and was struck by a Hyundai Accent that was traveling westbound on the Frontage Road. The driver and passengers of the Hyundai were not injured, remained on scene, and were cooperative. The driver of the Hyundai was determined to not be impaired by alcohol and or drugs at the time of the collision. Any alcohol and or drugs within the bicyclist’s system at the time of the collision may be determined through medical records.
The bicyclist did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. He was identified as 44-year-old Troy Michael Helmick. His family was located and notified of his passing.
Mr. Helmick’s failure to stop at the red traffic control signal was the major contributing factor of the collision. This investigation is on-going, and no charges or citations have been issued at this time. Additional information may be released at a later date as it becomes available.
