CONSTRUCTION PREPARATION BEGINS TODAY AT SANTA RITA PARK - Construction fencing is going up today, April 21, as the City of Tucson prepares to break ground on major improvements at Santa Rita Park, 401 E. 22nd St., on Thursday, April 24, at 9 a.m. The public is invited to the ceremony (enter off 21st Street due to park closure). The nearly $8 million investment — funded by Prop 407 bond funds, General Fund Framework dollars, a Tohono O’odham Nation Gaming Grant, and impact fees — will bring a splash pad, shaded playground, walking paths, new restrooms, event plaza, and public art, including mosaic benches designed by an Arizona artist and fabricated by local students. More than 300 trees and shrubs will be planted, a modern irrigation system will be installed, and 3rd Avenue in the area will be closed permanently to expand green space. The existing softball field will be reconfigured to include multipurpose fields, and a new parking lot will improve access. Construction completion is expected by summer 2026.
