HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION 900 BLOCK OF WEST IRVINGTON ROAD |
On the evening of April 18, 2025, officers from Operations Division South responded to a shooting in the 900 block of West Irvington Road. Officers arrived shortly after 6 p.m. and found a male lying in a parking lot west of 17th Avenue. The male had sustained gunshot trauma. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police identified the male as 39-year-old Michael Alex Montano Mendoza. His next of kin was notified. Shortly after, a 24-year-old male called 9-1-1 and was identified as the suspected shooter. Homicide Detectives were called to the scene and continued the investigation.
Through interviews and forensic evidence, detectives determined that Mr. Mendoza had entered a store located at 903 W. Irvington Road. He later stepped outside into the parking lot with an employee to view merchandise for sale. Once in the lot, Mr. Mendoza physically assaulted the employee, who then shot him. The employee sustained minor injuries and was treated at an area hospital. Based on their findings, detectives have not charged the employee; however, they will be presenting the case to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for review. The investigation remains ongoing.
