CITY OF TUCSON SET TO BREAK GROUND ON SANTA RITA PARK IMPROVEMENTS
Thursday, April 24, at 9 a.m.
Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, Ward 5 Council Member Richard Fimbres, and Tucson Parks and Recreation invite the public to the groundbreaking of significant improvements at Santa Rita Park, a project made possible through Tucson Delivers voter-approved Proposition 407. The groundbreaking will take place on Thursday, April 24, at 9 a.m., at Santa Rita Park, 401 E. 22nd St., (enter off of 21st Street due to park closure and fencing).
The nearly $8 million investment will bring new recreational amenities, enhanced green spaces, and improved infrastructure. These projects are funded by $5,547,700 in voter-approved Proposition 407 bond funds, $1,500,000 from General Fund Framework dollars, $150,000 from a Tohono O’odham Nation Gaming Grant, and $1,225,000 in Impact Fees. Fencing will go up around the park beginning Monday, April 21, 2025, with the completion of the project expected in summer 2026.
“Santa Rita Park has long been a beloved gathering place for families and neighbors that over the years has experienced historic disinvestment,” said Tucson Mayor Regina Romero. “Thanks to the voters who approved Prop 407, the City of Tucson is investing just over $5.5 million to revitalize this community space. In 2021 we began the master planning process in partnership with neighbors and residents who shared with us their vision for a more vibrant Santa Rita Park. Their input was critical to the amenities and improvements that we are making today. The new playgrounds, splash pad, shaded walking paths, and beautiful art reflect a commitment to creating safe and welcoming spaces for all Tucsonans to enjoy. I am proud to break ground on this project that honors this park’s rich history.”
The revitalization of Santa Rita Park will include the construction of a new splash pad and playground, both of which will feature shade structures to provide relief from the Arizona sun. Residents and visitors will enjoy newly created walking paths made of asphalt and decomposed granite, encircling the park and connecting its various amenities. A newly designed plaza area will provide a dedicated space for special events, community gatherings, and celebrations. Over 300 trees and shrubs will be planted, and a new restroom facility will be installed adjacent to the playground to accommodate increased park use.
The park improvements include the permanent closure of 3rd Avenue between 22nd Street and 21st Street, as this space will be incorporated into the park. The existing softball field on the southeast corner of the park will incorporate two new multipurpose fields in the space. A newly constructed parking lot, accessible from 22nd Street, will provide improved access for visitors. Additionally, a modern irrigation system will be installed throughout the park to support the health and sustainability of its green spaces.
A key highlight of the project is the inclusion of a public art installation that celebrates the rich history and culture of Santa Rita Park. Local art students from Drachman and Borton will design tiles for a mosaic, which will be incorporated into new benches throughout the park. This artwork will depict the community’s story, providing a meaningful and lasting tribute to the park’s history.
"Since the passing of Proposition 407, the Parks & Connections Bond, in 2018, the residents of the Santa Rita neighborhood have looked forward to seeing their beloved neighborhood park updated.,” said Ward 5 Council Member Richard Fimbres. “At some point in their lives, the people of our town have been a part of Santa Rita Park. Whether it was playing baseball or softball or participating in youth sports, they have fond memories here. As we begin the park renovations, more good memories will be created. I want to thank the people of Tucson for voting in favor of Proposition 407. We eagerly await the completion of the renovation of this historic park.”
