PROVIDE YOUR INPUT ON FISCAL YEAR 2026 CITY BUDGET - The City of Tucson is in the process of developing its Fiscal Year 2026 budget, which will take effect July 1, 2025. Mayor and Council, along with City staff, encourage residents to participate in shaping the budget by attending upcoming town hall meetings and completing a soon-to-be-released budget engagement survey. The town hall meetings will feature a brief presentation by City staff, followed by a live question-and-answer session. The first meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, from 6-7 p.m., at Randolph Recreation Center, 200 S. Alvernon Way (Building 2). TUCSON FIRE CHIEF CHUCK RYAN RETIRES AND SHARON MCDONOUGH TAKES OVER AS NEW CHIEF - Tucson Fire Department (TFD) Chief Chuck Ryan, who has led the department through significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and firefighter cancer mitigation efforts, announced his retirement last week. His tenure also saw the department achieve a prestigious Class 1 Public Protection Classification from the Insurance Services Office (ISO). Following his departure, Tucson City Manager Tim Thomure appointed Sharon McDonough as the new TFD chief. McDonough, who served recently as the director of the Public Safety Communications Department (PSCD), stepped in as interim chief immediately and officially assumes the permanent role on June 2, pending ratification by Mayor and Council. McDonough, a 34-year TFD veteran, was the first woman to serve as a battalion chief in the department. PSCD Deputy Director Mike Garcia now serves as interim director of that department, replacing McDonough. Read the news release
CITY SEEKING SENIOR ENGINEERING ASSOCIATE - The City of Tucson’s Planning and Development Services Department is hiring a senior engineering associate to review permits and plans for compliance in City codes and regulations regarding policies, standards, and manuals. The position ensures quality site development and land division within city limits and operates under the supervision of the Development Services/Neighborhood Resources section manager. Responsibilities include leading and instructing the daily work of engineering associates. Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree and have at least two years of directly related experience. ENJOY THE HAIKU HIKE IN DOWNTOWN TUCSON - Spring in Downtown Tucson brings poetry to unexpected places. The Haiku Hike, a literary competition and self-guided poetry trail, returns for its sixth year, inviting visitors and locals to discover poetry woven into the urban landscape. This year’s theme is "Belonging." Presented by the Downtown Tucson Partnership (DTP) and the University of Arizona Poetry Center, the sixth annual Haiku Hike literary competition showcases 20 winning haiku poems printed on acrylic signs in planters on Congress Street and Stone Avenue. Tucson Poet Lauerate TC Tolbert selected this year's winning haiku, which provide visual and cultural interest downtown. The display will last through through Sunday, June 1. Read more from DTP
