VIVA Site Community Tree Planting Celebration This Saturday, 9-11 A.M.
As a part of the City of Tucson's ongoing VIVA (Violence Interruption and Vitalization Action) work in the 6200 S. Campbell Ave. area, with the support of the City Manager's Office, Tucson Clean and Beautiful, Scotia Management Group/Avenue 5, the Tucson Police Department, and the Community Safety, Health, and Wellness Program, this community revitalization project will take place in the interior of the Ventura Vista apartment complex at 6200 S. Campbell Ave., between the basketball court and the leasing office from 9 - 11 a.m.
The event will bring community members together to plant 26 native shade trees, contributing to an expanded green canopy and providing much-needed natural shade, supporting youth who play basketball around the courts and engage in other outdoor activities during the hot months.
The native trees will be supported through green stormwater infrastructure, such as wood chip mulching, berms, and earthworks. These techniques are designed to retain moisture, promote healthy soil, and provide a low-cost, low-maintenance approach to watering, ensuring the long-term success of the native trees.
What is VIVA:
VIVA (Violence Interruption and Vitalization Action), is a holistic, data-driven, and evidence-informed approach to address gun violence at specific locations across the City that have experienced high-levels of gun related violence. VIVA efforts seek to focus resources on disrupting criminal networks at these sites while simultaneously making improvements to these locations with the goal of reducing said gun violence and fostering positive activation of the areas. The 6200 S. Campbell Ave. site was one of first locations where the City launched VIVA and it has shown great success in reducing violent gun crime.
