 APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR HIGH SCHOOL BATTLE OF THE BANDS
Tucson Parks and Recreation is looking for talented bands with artists 13-18 years old to compete in the High School Battle of the Bands this spring. Grand Prize winners will receive a show promoted by Best Life Presents, an appearance on KXCI’s “Locals Only” radio show, and a full home recording package, including a copy of Ableton Suite and a Cloud Microphone . Interested bands can apply online at the link below, now through Friday, March 14. The event will be held on Sunday, April 6, at noon, at Gene C. Reid Park’s DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center.

 JOIN A COMMUNITY DIALOGUE ON FOOD DISTRIBUTION AT CITY PARKS
Tucson Parks and Recreation, in partnership with the Center for Community Mediation and Facilitation, invites the public to participate in a community dialogue on food distribution at City parks. The discussions will explore how the City can support local food distribution efforts in city parks while addressing neighborhood and food safety concerns. The virtual session will be held on Wednesday, March 5, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. via Zoom, and the in-person session will take place on Saturday, March 8, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Donna Liggins Center, 2160 N. 6th Ave. To RSVP or for more information, visit the website below or call 520-791-4873.
 REGISTER FOR SPRING BREAK SCHOOL’S OUT CAMPS
Tucson Parks and Recreation will be offering School's Out Spring Break Camps at multiple sites throughout Tucson for children ages 5-11 (must be in kindergarten), or In-Betweener's Club for ages 12-14. Camps will be from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. daily March 10-21 for Clements Center (serving Vail School District) for $50/participant, March 17-21 for Marty Birdman Center (serving Amphi School District), and March 10-14 for all other locations, for $25/city-resident or $32/non-city resident. Activities include games, sports, social interaction, dance, art projects, and nutrition-based learning activities. Register online at the link below.
 TUCSON PARKS AND RECREATION HOSTS OPEN HOUSES AT ALL RECREATION CENTERS
Find a place for community connection, fitness, and fun. Tucson Parks and Recreation is hosting open houses at all centers throughout the year, giving you a chance to take tours, learn about programs and events, and even score some free schwag.  TUCSON PARKS AND RECRREATION TO HOST SUMMER JOB FAIR
Tucson Parks and Recreation will host a summer job fair on Friday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the department’s administration building, 900 S. Randolph Way. The job fair will highlight a variety of seasonal opportunities, including positions for KIDCO, lifeguards, sports, and therapeutic recreation workers. These roles provide valuable experience and a chance to make a difference in the community while earning a paycheck. Interested applicants are encouraged to attend to learn more and apply on-site.

TUCSON'S MAYOR AND COUNCIL APPROVE RENAMING OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS PARK TO DANNY LOPEZ PARK
On Feb. 19, Tucson’s Mayor and Council approved renaming Christopher Columbus Park to Danny Lopez Park, honoring Danny Lopez, a Tohono O'odham educator and elder who devoted his life to preserving his community’s language and culture. The renaming process began in October 2024 with a 45-day public comment period. Tucson Parks and Recreation will update signage and online references, with plans for a formal dedication ceremony to celebrate this tribute to Lopez’s enduring legacy.

 In November 2018, City of Tucson voters approved Proposition 407, a $225 million bond package for capital improvements. The bond funds are dedicated to improving City park amenities (playgrounds, sports fields, pools, splash pads, and recreation centers) as well as connections (pedestrian pathways, bicycle pathways, and pedestrian and bicycle safety).  CUSHING STREET SKATE PARK GROUNDBREAKING
Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, Vice Mayor and Ward 1 Council Member Lane Santa Cruz, and Tucson Parks and Recreation invite the public to the Cushing Street Skate Park groundbreaking, marking a major milestone for the community-driven project.

The new skate park, located beneath the freeway underpass at Cushing Street and Interstate 10, is the result of years of public support, fundraising efforts, and multiple funding contributions totaling $2,648,258.67. Major contributions include $500,000 each from Proposition 407, the City Framework, and the City Investment Plan; $300,000 from the Tohono O’odham Nation Grant; $250,000 each from the Mayor’s Office and a participatory budgeting process - “Budget De La Gente”; $200,000 from Rio Nuevo, $100,000 from the Pascua Yaqui Tribe; and $48,258.67 to date in donations.
 NEW PATH AT JESSE OWENS PARK
The community may now enjoy a new decomposed granite pathway around the perimeter of the Jesse Owens Park. This pathway connects to multiple asphalt paths that are by the baseball and softball fields. The contractor for this project has a few items to finish up in the next couple weeks.
A rainwater harvesting project is currently underway constructing basins along with planting native trees and shrubs near the basins. The anticipated completion date for this project is in the next four weeks.
