MONDAY IS THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER TO VOTE IN NEXT MONTH'S CITY ELECTION - The deadline to register to vote (link below) in the Tuesday, March 11, City of Tucson Special Election is Monday, Feb. 10, at 11:59 p.m. "The Choice is Yours" sample ballot/publicity pamphlet recently was mailed to each household with a registered voter. City voters will be asked to consider a new, temporary half-cent sales tax for the next 10 years to fund a safer and more vibrant Tucson. If Proposition 414 is approved, the City’s sales tax rate would increase to 3.1% and generate a projected $800 million over those 10 years. The revenue the half-cent sales tax would generate over that period would be split into five categories, with 65.75% of the funding allocated to public safety investments and 34.25% allocated to community resiliency investments. The League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson (LWV) will host a public forum on Proposition 414 this Saturday, Feb. 8, from 3-4 p.m. at the Murphy-Wilmot Library, 530 N. Wilmot Road. HHW/SHREDDING EVENT THIS WEEKEND - The City of Tucson's Environmental Services Department (ESD) is hosting its monthly Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Event this Saturday, Feb. 8, from 8 a.m.-noon, at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) building, 750 S. Tucson Blvd. City residents can drop off HHW, including paint (not dried), batteries, electronic waste, fluorescent lamps and bulbs, paper documents for shredding (limit three boxes), recyclables, cleaning products, pool chemicals, and glass bottles and jars at no charge. Unknown chemicals will not be accepted. The event is free for City of Tucson residents with proof of address. Residents from Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita, and unincorporated Pima County will be charged a $10 fee to drop off materials. TOUR THE LOS REALES SUSTAINABILITY CAMPUS AND RECYCLING FACILITY - Take a tour to learn about how your trash and recycling is collected and where “away” is when it's taken away from your home or business. On Valentines Day, Friday, Feb. 14, the City of Tucson Environmental Services Department (ESD) is offering a tour of the Los Reales Sustainability Campus and the Republic Services Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). Participants will get a behind-the-scenes view and learn how ESD manages waste diversion in Tucson. The tour will begin at the Price Service Center, 4004 S. Park Ave. From there, the bus will take participants to the MRF. The recycling facility sorts, bales, and markets recyclable materials collected in the blue barrel program. The second stop is the Los Reales Sustainability Campus, 5300 E. Los Reales Road, where participants will see how ESD handles Household Hazardous Waste and hear how landfill cells protect groundwater. There also will be a stop at the composting facility to see the compost product, windrows and food waste collection of the FoodCycle program. 2025 START GRANT APPLICATION PERIOD FOR ARTISTS IS NOW OPEN - The Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona announces a grant opportunity available to artists, artist groups, collectives, co-ops, community groups, fiscally sponsored organizations, and 501(c)3 organizations in the City of Tucson, City of South Tucson, Pima County, Tohono O’odham Nation, and Pascua Yaqui Tribe. With support from the City of Tucson and Pima County, these grants provide award funds through two alternate tracks of support. The Community Impact track provides financial support to individuals and groups for projects that would positively affect a community through an artistic endeavor. The Artist Development track provides financial support to creatives for whom a specific, practice-related capital resource or professional development experience would affect their artistic practice. The funding range of the "stART Grant" program is up to $3,000. The deadline to apply (link below) is Thursday, March 6, at 11:59 p.m.
