TUCSON'S MAYOR AND COUNCIL APPROVE RENAMING OF MANSFIELD PARK TO DORIS J. THOMPSON PARK
Tucson’s Mayor and Council on Wednesday, Jan. 22, approved the renaming of Mansfield Park, 2000 N. 4th Avenue, to Doris J. Thompson Park in recognition of Thompson’s remarkable contributions to the Sugar Hill Neighborhood and the Tucson community. In addition, Mansfield Pool will be renamed Thompson Pool.
Doris J. Thompson, a dedicated advocate for her community, played a pivotal role in improving the quality of life for residents of the Sugar Hill Neighborhood. Her efforts in championing neighborhood revitalization, fostering community engagement, and promoting inclusivity have left a lasting legacy that continues to benefit Tucson residents today.
The renaming process began in August 2024, when Tucson Parks and Recreation initiated a 45-day public comment period after receiving a formal proposal to rename the park. The comment period, which ran from Aug. 21-Oct. 6, 2024, allowed community members to share their input in accordance with City of Tucson Administrative Directive 1.02-19.
In the coming months, Tucson Parks and Recreation will update park signage and other online references to reflect the new name. Residents can expect more details about a formal dedication ceremony to celebrate this milestone in the near future.
