Night Zebra Unit Yields Results

The ODM team has brought back the nighttime Zebra Officers, Max McCully and Adrian Harrison, to focus on quality of life issues and locating wanted felons.

Throughout the month, they have made significant strides in tracking down many individuals with outstanding warrants, including:

• A male with a felony probation violation warrant out of Maricopa, located at Grant and Alvernon in the VIVA site (Violence Interruption and Vitalization Action).
• A male with a felony arrest warrant for narcotics possession, found in the 2900 block of North Palo Verde.
• A female with a felony probation violation warrant related to burglary, located in the 3600 block of East 3rd.
• A female with a felony warrant for failure to appear related to a dangerous drug arrest, found in Miramonte Park after hours.
• A male with a felony probation violation warrant and nine misdemeanor warrants, located in the 4500 block of East Speedway.
• A female with an Arizona Department of Corrections parole violation warrant, located in the 3800 block of East Speedway.

These targeted efforts continue to help improve the safety and quality of life in the community. Great work, Officers McCully and Harrison!

Property Damage Arrest

ODM Officer Parris noticed ongoing incidents of damage at a church in the 5300 block of East Pima, where the male suspect was identified and was court ordered restricted from the area. She relayed the information to other officers.

During proactive policing in the area of Speedway and Craycroft, LPO York (Lead Patrol Officer) spotted the suspect entering a nearby business. After he exited, LPO York was able to take him into custody without incident. Coordinating with ODM Neighborhood Crimes Section Detectives, the suspect was arrested on multiple felony charges, including Aggravated Harassment (x2), Aggravated Criminal Damage, and Drug Paraphernalia.

This case is a great example of effective teamwork between church staff, officers, and detectives that helped bring the suspect to justice. Great work all around!

Organized Retail Theft Arrest

Officers Araiza and Bonillas were alerted by loss prevention staff at a major retailer about a known serial shoplifter who had entered the store. They quickly made contact with the suspect as he exited the store and were able to detain him without incident. At the time, he had nearly $400 worth of stolen items in his possession.

Working closely with loss prevention staff and ODM Neighborhood Crimes Section Detectives, the Officers were able to link the suspect to 26 shoplifting incidents, totaling over $5,000 in stolen merchandise. The male was arrested for Organized Retail Theft and Drug Paraphernalia, both felonies, and seven misdemeanor warrants were also served – another case of successful collaboration between local businesses and the ODM team.

ODM in the Community

Members from ODM participated in several community events throughout the month.

• On December 14th, ODM participated in two community events: Free pictures with Santa and giveaways for the kids at the Boys and Girls Club, and Homicide Survivors Hope for the Holidays event.
• On December 20th, ODM held a photos with Santa event at Arizona Autism Charter Schools, Inc.
• On December 21st, ODM members participated in a Shop With a Cop Event at Marshall’s. McGruff joined Santa and the kids had a fantastic time.

Member Highlight

Officer Dustin Sheeley joined the Tucson Police Department in May 2023 and has been serving in Midtown since completing the academy. He has quickly earned a reputation as a reliable and proactive officer. Highly engaged, Officer Sheeley works diligently to address ongoing issues in the division. In December 2024, while patrolling an apartment complex known for its high crime rate, he observed two males using drugs. Upon noticing Officer Sheeley, both individuals fled. He was able to apprehend one of them, who discarded a handgun during the pursuit. The firearm was later confirmed to be stolen, and a NIBIN check revealed that it had been used in a shooting at the same complex months prior. Additionally, Officer Sheeley was able to identify the second male who had fled, who was later arrested on felony charges. Officer Sheeley’s actions not only earned him a commendation from his division, but also praise from detectives and prosecutors for his meticulous report writing, which played a key role in connecting cases and helping address critical issues in the community.

Crime Prevention Tip

There's a cruel scam going around that has cost some Americans hundreds of thousands of dollars - or more. Called "pig butchering," it refers to the practice of fattening hogs before slaughter. For a detailed description of how the scam works, see ProPublica's article on how pig butchering scams work. Many of these scammers use MetaTrader, available in both the Apple and Google app stores. See the inset in this ProPublica article. And remember: if it seems too good to be true, it most likely is!
