Firearm Arrest
On September 20, 2024, ODS patrol responded to the 1200 block of East Drexel Road for a report of aggravated assault involving a firearm. The suspect pointed a firearm at the victim over a parking dispute and fled the area in a red Dodge Charger. ODS patrol took the initial report, gathered evidence, and spoke with a witness, which yielded a potential suspect.
ODS NCS detectives continued the investigation. Additional witnesses were located and contacted. Probable cause was established to arrest the suspect.
On December 10, 2024, ODE CRT (Operations Division East Community Response Team) assisted with surveillance of the suspect and found him at his residence in Operations Division East. Due to the defendant's violent history, TPD S.W.A.T. and Hostage Negotiations Units were activated in an effort to safely contact the suspect and other occupants inside the home. The suspect was eventually detained, interviewed, and made admissions in the case. A search warrant was executed at the defendant's home, which recovered evidence. The suspect was arrested for Disorderly Conduct With a Deadly Weapon.
Car Theft Suspect Linked to Postal Investigation
On November 23, 2024, ODS patrol responded to the 700 block of West Calle Medina for a report of a stolen motor vehicle.
The following morning, the victim's vehicle was recovered by ODS patrol after residents found a male slumped over in the vehicle. The male suspect was contacted and a set of house keys was found in the vehicle's ignition.
The suspect was ultimately arrested for Theft of Means of Transportation. Search of the vehicle also found several pieces of unopened mail from the area the vehicle was stolen from.
Through coordination with the United States Postal Service, the defendant was found to be a suspect in an active federal investigation and the stolen mail was turned over to the Postal Inspector for their investigation.

ODS in the Community
ODS officers participated in Pio Decimo Center’s Christmas Program on December 19th ... that Santa Claus sure bears a striking resemblance to Lieutenant Jack Julsing!
ODS officers and CSOs also participated in Miracle on 31st Street on December 22nd. We did not have to arrest the green gentleman, whose heart had grown three sizes that day.
ODS command staff served up a delicious meal for all ODS members to celebrate the holidays and thank everyone for all their hard work and dedication! A huge thank you also to Rollies Mexican Patio Grill for their generous donation of carne asada, beans, rice, and salsa – delicious!
ODS officers also participated in the 36th Street and Enchanted Hills Trailhead Clean-up on January 18th. This was a collaborative event involving Council Member Lane Santa Cruz and her Ward 1 staff, Pima County Conservation Lands and Resources staff, and a whole host of community members.
Thank you to everyone who helped organize and to those who showed up for the trash cleanup on a Saturday – it was a huge success. We had:
- 42 volunteers (84 hours of work)
- 30 bags of trash, three tires, and one mattress
- No injuries!
 Member Highlight
On the evening of January 13, 2025, ODS Officers were conducting proactive patrols in a high-crime area.
During this operation, officers observed a suspicious individual operating a bicycle with apparent Title 28 violations. Upon initiating a traffic stop, the individual fled, as records checks revealed an outstanding Felony Probation Violation warrant.
Officers employed Small Unit Tactics to locate the fugitive. Due to fuel limitations with the TPD Air Unit, Officer Morales took decisive action by deploying TPD's Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) in his additional role as a Public Safety Drone Operator (PSDO). This critical decision enabled him to continue the search for the suspect.
While conducting aerial surveillance, Officer Morales successfully detected a heat signature under a vehicle in a carport. His keen attention to detail led to the location of the wanted individual, who was apprehended by responding officers without further incident.
Officer Morales’ dedication to duty and pursuit of excellence are demonstrated by his recent achievement of obtaining his UAS certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. In just the two months since then, he has completed over 120 missions, logging more than 40 hours of flight time, and assisted in the successful apprehension of a wanted suspect. Well done!

Crime Prevention Tip
There's a cruel scam going around that has cost some Americans hundreds of thousands of dollars – or more.
Called "pig butchering," it refers to the practice of fattening hogs before slaughter.
For a detailed description of how the scam works, see ProPublica's article on how pig butchering scams work.
Many of these scammers use MetaTrader, available in both the Apple and Google app stores. See the inset in this ProPublica article. And remember: if it seems too good to be true, it most likely is!
