Proactive Policing Keeping Our Kids Safe
On December 12th, TPD ODW Officer Atchley conducted surveillance near the Ronstadt Transit Center (RTC) and saw two males engaged in a narcotics transaction. They stopped when security walked past them and left the RTC to continue the transaction off-site. The suspect had hidden a bag of narcotics on his person and denied he had them in his possession when asked. Eventually the narcotics were located, and the suspect was charged with possession of a narcotic for sale, possession of a dangerous drug for sale, and for drug sales inside a drug-free school zone.
The following items were found on the arrestee:
- 85 fentanyl pills inside the baggie the suspect attempted to hide
- 5 baggies of meth weighing a total 9.638 grams, all of which were packaged for sale
- Another baggie containing 30 mg oxycodone pills
The suspect was arrested and booked. Nice job, Officer Atchley!

Collaboration Between ODW Patrol, ODW CRT and TPD Adult Sexual Assault Unit Yields Arrest
On December 30th, two calls were placed to 911 regarding sexual offenses located at an apartment complex near Blacklidge and Balboa. Both victims, who were elderly, described being sexually assaulted by a young black male.
Detectives from the Adult Sexual Assault Unit responded, along with the Crime Scene Unit, for further investigation. The suspect was subsequently identified through the excellent work of CSO Betty Rascon, using video obtained from the apartment complex.
Approximately a week later, ODW Patrol Officer Lamey observed the suspect driving a vehicle and notified ODW CRT, who set up surveillance on a residence located near Prince and Mountain. The suspect eventually exited the residence and was apprehended without incident. He was arrested for sexual abuse, kidnapping, burglary, and aggravated assault – a great example of teamwork by all involved.

Navajo and Cemetery Wash Cleanup to Assist With ODW VIVA Efforts
This area has long been problematic for ODW patrol officers and the community and has a direct effect on the ODW VIVA project (Violence Interruption and Vitalization Action). These washes had overgrown trees and shrubs that created an officer safety issue for patrol officers and a haven for criminals to conduct illicit activity.
ODW partnered with several City of Tucson and Pima County departments to have the area cleaned out. Special thanks to the City of Tucson Environmental Services Department for their hard work in cleaning up this location. We appreciate you!
ODW Christmas Party
On December 23rd, ODW celebrated the holidays with a Division Christmas Party that was catered by Texas Roadhouse. It was a fun event with good food, Mariachi music, and great people! We also had a special visit from Santa! A special thank you to Assistant Chiefs Schaner and Duffy for attending.

Crime Prevention Tip
There's a cruel scam going around that has cost some Americans hundreds of thousands of dollars – or more.
Called "pig butchering," it refers to the practice of fattening hogs before slaughter.
For a detailed description of how the scam works, see ProPublica's article on how pig butchering scams work.
Many of these scammers use MetaTrader, available in both the Apple and Google app stores. See the inset in this ProPublica article. And remember: if it seems too good to be true, it most likely is!
