FATAL VEHICLE COLLISION 3300 BLOCK OF WEST STARR PASS BOULEVARD |
On January 22, 2025, just before 8:00 a.m., officers from Operations Division South responded to a single-vehicle collision on West Starr Pass Boulevard, near South Flowering Cactus Court. Tucson Fire Department personnel also responded to the scene and evaluated the involved parties. The driver and passenger were both pronounced deceased. Officers identified them as 32-year-old Roman Ortega, and 29-year-old Jazmin Daniela Gonzalez Mada. Their families were located and notified. Traffic Unit Detectives were briefed and continued the investigation.
Roadway evidence indicated that on January 21, at approximately 9:00 p.m., Mr. Ortega was driving a red 2016 Ford Fiesta eastbound on Starr Pass Blvd. The Ford was traveling at high speeds and failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. The vehicle drove over the raised curb and struck a tree. Neither occupant wore their seatbelt and Ms. Gonzalez Mada was ejected from the vehicle. Detectives found evidence of alcohol consumption at the scene and believe impairment could be a factor.
Excessive speed and impairment are believed to be the major contributing factors of the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.
