On January 16th, 2025, shortly after 9 a.m., a staff member at Legacy Traditional School – East Tucson, 9290 E. Golf Links Road, informed a uniformed Tucson Police Officer, who was working at the school, that an adult male was acting erratic in the parking lot. The officer responded to the parking lot and approached the vehicle, but the male in question had already left the parking lot on foot and entered the school’s cafeteria through an open gate. The officer was able to locate the male near the cafeteria, in the gymnasium, which was occupied by students and staff. The suspect was found sitting down and talking to himself. The officer immediately detained the male without further incident. A search of the suspect resulted in officers locating a loaded handgun and knife in his possession. He has been identified as 31-year-old Daniel Hollander.
Investigators from TPD’s Threat Mitigation Until and Operations Division East/Neighborhood Crimes Section responded to continue the investigation. Hollander was interviewed and ultimately booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center. He was charged with, Attempted Terrorism, Interfering with an Educational Institution, Weapons Misconduct-School Grounds, and 1st Degree Burglary.
The Tucson Police Department extends its deepest gratitude to the parents, staff members of Legacy Traditional, the off-duty officer, and the additional officers from Operations Division East who swiftly responded to address the suspect and prevent a potentially deadly situation.
The TPD officer who was on duty at the campus was part of a program funded by the Arizona Department of Education, which provided grants to four schools. TPD’s Special Duty Office partnered with these schools to supply trained School Safety Officers (SSOs). In 2024, 24 trained officers worked a total of 11,735 hours in the grant-funded schools. In January 2025, four more schools were added to the program, and four additional officers received SSO-specific training, bringing the total to eight schools and 28 trained SSOs.
