On Sunday, January 12, 2025, shortly after 3:00 p.m., officers from Operations Division Midtown and personnel from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the intersection of South Craycroft Road and East Cooper Street for reports of a collision involving a white 2008 Ford F-350 and a blue 2024 Yamaha YZF-R7 motorcycle. The motorcyclist, 23-year-old E’mari Armond Phillips, was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries. After arriving at the hospital, Mr. Phillips succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. Next of kin has been notified of his passing.
Detectives from the Traffic Investigations Unit responded to the scene to continue the investigation. After completing interviews and evaluating roadway evidence, detectives determined that the driver of the Ford F-350 was traveling north and attempting to make a westbound turn onto E. Cooper St. when he collided with Mr. Phillips, who was driving southbound on N. Craycroft Rd. in the median lane. Preliminary evidence indicates that Mr. Phillips was traveling well above the posted speed limit prior to the collision.
The driver of the F-350, an adult male, immediately stopped after the collision and cooperated with the investigation. An officer with the Impaired Driver Enforcement Unit responded to assist and determined that the driver of the F-350 was not impaired by alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision.
Failure to yield while making a left turn by the driver of the F-350 and speeding by Mr. Phillips were the major contributing factors of the collision.
This remains an ongoing investigation. No charges or citations have been issued at this time.
