In the days following the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Jasper Neace, detectives quickly identified a person of interest; 33-year-old Gilbert Joseph Martinez. On July 30, 2024, officers from Operations Division West/Community Response Team came into contact with Mr. Martinez and arrested him on an unrelated weapons violation. Detectives ultimately charged Mr. Martinez with prohibited possessor and booked him into the Pima County Jail.
Detectives awaited further evidence examination and completed additional interviews with witnesses. On January 9, 2025, TPD Homicide Detectives developed probable cause to charge Mr. Martinez for the shooting death of Mr. Neace. Detectives responded to the Pima County Jail, where Mr. Martinez was still being held, and added one count of 1st Degree Murder. The original media release from July 18, 2024, is listed below.

Last night, patrol officers from Operations Division West were dispatched to the report of a shooting near N. Oracle Road and W. Prince Road. Upon arrival, they located an adult male victim with gunshot trauma who ultimately succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Tucson Police Homicide Detectives have identified the victim as 29-year-old Jasper Charles Neace. His family was notified of his passing. At this point in the investigation, detectives learned that the shooting took place just after 9:10 p.m. in front of 420 W. Prince Rd. Officers and Tucson Fire Department Medics rendered first aid to Mr. Neace prior to him being transported to Banner University Medical Center. Evidence was collected and processed from the scene and detectives are waiting to gather additional forensic evidence. Several 9-1-1 calls were made reporting the shooting, additionally; detectives believe several witnesses fled the scene prior to police arrival. Detectives are asking those potential witnesses or anyone with information to call 9-1-1 or 88-CRIME, you can submit information anonymously. No suspects have been identified and the investigation remains ongoing. Updates will be provided as they become available.
