Hello and Happy New Year Tucson!
Tomorrow Mayor Romero will offer her annual address to the City at 10am at the Tucson Convention Center. I appreciate her decision to make the event free and open to the Public rather than for guests of groups purchasing tables/tickets. I’ll be sure to share her remarks next week in our newsletter.
In the afternoon Mayor and Council will meet. All materials for the Study and Regular Sessions can be found here:
Our Study Session will focus primarily on water supply/management in keeping with Tucson’s One Water 2100 Plan:
In addition we will continue our review and work on the city’s housing affordability plan.
During Regular Session we will be voting on acceptance of a number of federal grants related to both public safety and housing, the types of grants that we believe will be diminishing over the coming few years that target key community priorities. It’s worth noting that our Mayor and city teams have been incredibly successful in securing funding through a range of competitive federal grants programs over the past five years. Our challenge will be to sustain or fully implement the evidence-based and impactful initiatives even as federal and state funding decrease notably.
Just before the holidays the Ward 6 team and I toured the Community Safety Awareness and Response Center (CSARC) which pilots key uses of technology and equipment to advance public safety. That demonstration project, as well as the fully coordinated dispatching of calls to police, fire, behavioral health/crisis response partners, and street outreach teams shows how we can benefit from getting “the right work in the right hands” while problem-solving across departments with vastly expanded data. Clearly the information and insights we gained from the tour will be invaluable as we move forward with our community to improve Tucson’s health, well-being and safety.
Thanks for all you continue to contribute toward creating a better Tucson as well.

Community Events and Resources
Tucson Great Decisions
Great Decisions is a program of small-group discussions about foreign affairs, sponsored nationwide by the Foreign Policy Association, and here in Tucson by the nonprofit Tucson Great Decisions Association. There are more than 20 groups in this area, and one of the groups will be meeting on Monday mornings here at Ward 6 Council Office starting on January 27th. We’ll be meeting in person and by Zoom, working with information provided by a Briefing Book and a video. Members share their opinions on each of 8 topics in an easy, nonpartisan manner. To join, contact Shirley Muney at smuney2k@yahoo.com. (To explore the nature of Great Decisions, and see locations of other groups, visit www.tgda.org [tgda.org].)
The Neighbors Care Alliance (NCA)
Join Pima Council on Aging (PCOA) for their Nosh & Know event, on January 9th. The event is about Neighbors Helping Neighbors and how individual neighborhoods can create a Neighbors Care Program [pcoa.org] through the Neighbors Care Alliance anchored by PCOA.
The Neighbors Care Alliance (NCA) is a network of neighborhood volunteer programs with a shared mission of helping older adults thrive safely in their homes for as long as possible. The programs serve specific geographic areas, and each is independently organized. Pima Council on Aging serves as the program administrator and provides tools to build infrastructure, volunteer training, opportunities for networking, access to community resources, and mileage reimbursement. Volunteers support older adults through a variety of services which can include, transportation to medical appointments and shopping, running errands, meal delivery, phone calls and visits, light house and yard work, and caregiver respite. Neighbors connecting to neighbors reduces the social isolation many older adults face while helping to meet everyday needs.
Southern Arizona Against Slavery (SAAS)
Southern Arizona Against Slavery (SAAS) is inviting all of you to join for the walk on January 18th, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The event will include resource tables and, most importantly, survivor stories. Survivors will share their experiences and provide insights into how we, as a community, can respond.
