WINTERHAVEN FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS STARTS THIS WEEKEND - The 75th annual Winterhaven Festival of Lights begins Saturday, Dec.14, and runs through Saturday, Dec. 28, from 6-10 p.m. nightly. This holiday celebration is also a major fundraiser for the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. In 2023, the Tucson community donated $31,222 and 37,800 pounds of food to the Food Bank during the Festival of Lights. STREET FAIR STREETCAR DETOUR AND TRANSIT OPTIONS - The 55th Annual Fourth Avenue Winter Street Fair runs tomorrow through Sunday, Dec. 13-15. This year’s fair will feature more than 350 unique vendors, plenty of food, and live entertainment. Admission is free. To accommodate the event, Sun Link will experience a temporary streetcar route detour that already is in effect. Streetcar stops that won't be in service are at Fourth Avenue/Sixth Street and Fourth Avenue/Fourth Street. Riders can either walk through the Street Fair on the way to the next stop or board the special event Sun Tran bus, which will be detouring around the area and connecting back to the streetcar route. OPERATION DEEP FREEZE BEGINS ITS SEASON - Operation Deep Freeze (ODF) is Tucson's winter severe-weather emergency shelter for people experiencing homelessness. It goes into effect when weather predictions are for overnight temperatures of 40°F or lower with rain, 35°F or lower without rain, or when wind chill factors indicate a health hazard from exposure. Limited overflow shelter beds are available for people seeking safe refuge from the weather. You do not need identification or a TB card to get shelter. To join ODF, only when in effect, go to The Salvation Army Hospitality House, 1002 N. Main Ave., between 2-4 p.m., for intake.
