Tucson Water and Tucson Fire Department Announce Annual Controlled Burn at Sweetwater Wetlands
Tucson, AZ —Tucson Water and the Tucson Fire Department will conduct the second phase of the Sweetwater Wetlands annual controlled burn on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, starting at 8:00 AM. The wetlands will be closed to the public during the burn and will reopen on Friday, November 15, 2024.
This collaborative effort, ongoing since 1999, supports the Mosquito Abatement Program, provides firefighter training, and helps manage invasive plant species. The burn is scheduled in two phases. The first phase was held on October 1, 2024 and the second is scheduled to take place on November 13, 2024. The burning of one basin at a time promotes the gentle regeneration of the native riparian habitat before the winter bird migratory season.
Weather permitting, the burn will be conducted safely with prevailing winds to minimize risk. Nearby residents may notice smoke or the smell of burning vegetation; those sensitive to smoke should take precautions. If conditions are unfavorable, the burn will be rescheduled for November 19, 2024.
Sweetwater Wetlands is located at 2511 W. Sweetwater Drive, west of Prince and I-10. For more information, visit:
