The Tucson Police Department is investigating the recent death of an infant boy in Midtown Tucson. The child’s father has been arrested and charged with his murder and child abuse.
On Monday, October 21, 2024, members of the Tucson Fire Department were dispatched to an apartment complex located at 4809 E. Pima St. for the report of a 10-month-old child experiencing seizures. Upon arrival, TFD Medics rendered aid to the child and ultimately transported him to Tucson Medical Center. The child was found to have serious injuries and was listed in critical condition. The infant was transferred to Banner University Medical Center for emergency surgery. Detectives from TPD’s Child Abuse Unit were contacted and responded to continue the investigation. Detectives conducted a preliminary investigation and interviewed the infant’s father.
On October 30, 2024, detectives conducted additional follow up with medical personnel and learned that the infant’s injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma. Detectives contacted and arrested the child’s father, 28-year-old Jimmy Torre McElroy. He was charged with two counts of Child Abuse and subsequently transported and booked into the Pima County Jail. On Tuesday, November 5th, detectives were notified that the infant had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. Detectives presented their findings to the Pima County Attorney’s Office and amended McElroy’s charges to 2nd Degree Murder and Child Abuse.
