 Hello Tucson,
The Mayor and Council will be meeting on Thursday this week due to the election tomorrow (please VOTE! 😊). During Study Session we will hold an Executive Session regarding our litigation with the Air Force over PFAS water contamination. We will also be reviewing the current parameters in place for aid groups seeking to offer food and other essentials in city parks. It is likely we will initiate a process for community dialogue on those rules to be sure the community (housed and unhoused alike) are best served by our approach. During Regular Session we will be taking action on the proposal to limit the hours of Hookah Lounges, requiring that they close at midnight (2am for those holding liquor licenses since that pulls them under state rules). That’s the first step we’re taking; at a meeting in the near future we will also take action on adding a special business licensing requirement so establishments with persistent crime and TPD call outs can be held accountable through the revocation or suspension of that special license to operate.
New Pool Hours November 12 – March 30, 2025
Tucson Parks and Recreation has announced its winter pool schedule, running from November 12, 2024, to March 30, 2025. The winter pools are heated to 78-82 degrees and will be open for adult lap swim as well as recreational swim times. Please note that diving boards and slides will not be available. For the full pool schedule, visit tucsonaz.gov/parks.
Park Place Mall’s Mural Art Project
Park Place Mall hosted a dedication ceremony for Arizona’s largest mural, created by local artist Jessica Gonzeles, on Saturday, November 2nd. Jessica’s design captures the vibrancy and Southwestern culture of Park Place Mall. We invite the community to come and enjoy this remarkable new work of art.
Location: A 26,400 sq. ft. (~450 ft wide by 62 ft tall) section of the exterior wall located near Cinemark Century Theaters. Here’s a glimpse of the finished project.
Reid Park Zoo Welcomes Tsavo the African Elephant
Tsavo, a spirited 16-year-old male elephant, has recently joined the Reid Park Zoo’s herd of five female elephants. His arrival is part of the AZA African Elephant Species Survival Plan® (SSP), which coordinates with zoos across the country to promote the health, welfare, and genetic diversity of elephants.
Tsavo is adjusting well to his new habitat and bonding with his care team. As he becomes more comfortable, he’ll begin interacting with the rest of the herd: Semba, mother of Nandi, Penzi, and Meru, and Lungile, who acts as a nurturing “allomother” to the younger calves.
At times, Tsavo can be spotted on the Zoo Cams or on the far side of the elephant habitat. Stay tuned for updates as he grows more acquainted with the herd and explores the more visible parts of his habitat.
Help Spread the Word
Thank you to everyone who continues to participate in the recycling program! We’d like to address a few ongoing issues: some people are still using white, clear, and black bags for recycling, and loose plastic is being placed in bins. Please help spread the word that only the orange Hefty ReNew bags are accepted for recycling, and all items must be bagged—no loose materials, please.
