City of Tucson Office of Economic Initiatives Marks Manufacturing Month
Manufacturing Month, held nationally in October, is an opportunity to show the reality of modern manufacturing careers as companies and educational institutions around the country open their doors to students, parents, teachers, and community members. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero will proclaim Manufacturing Month at tomorrow’s City Council meeting with the presentation of a proclamation. Community partners from Sargent Aerospace, Industrial Tool, Die & Engineering, Pima County, Arizona Tech Council, Women in Manufacturing, and Southern Arizona Manufacturing Partners will be in attendance.
Designed to inspire the next generation to enter careers in modern manufacturing, Manufacturing Day in Tucson was celebrated on October 17. The City of Tucson Office of Economic Initiatives in partnership with Pima County Economic Development, Pima Community College, Pima County Superintendent’s Office, Pima One Stop, and Southern Arizona Manufacturing Partners collaborated to host approximately 50 students from area schools. Students from Desert View High School and Tucson High School visited AGM Container Controls and Evaero. Students from Mica Mountain High School and Tanque Verde High School visited Howmet and Industrial Tool, Die & Engineering. All students visited Pima Community College Downtown Campus Center of Excellence in Applied Technology and listened to presentations on available manufacturing career programs at the college. Instructors at PCC provided hands-on demonstrations in automotive maintenance, welding, machining, and robotics.
Manufacturing Month and corresponding events bring to light the need for manufacturing workers. According to the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte, between now and 2030, 4 million manufacturing jobs need to be filled. The Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Bureau of Labor Statistics report the average annual income of U.S. manufacturing employees was $88,406 in 2019.
“We’re pleased the students got a first-hand look inside our local manufacturing facilities,” said Barbra Coffee, Economic Initiatives director for the City of Tucson. “We aim to inspire future generations to enter manufacturing careers which are certainly in high demand and offer great earning potential.”
