ODM in the Community
Historically, ODM has been a community partner with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tucson – and this year has been no exception.
ODM personnel participated in their Basketball Fun Fest on September 21 at 1935 South Columbus Boulevard – an excellent opportunity for Tucson youth to interact with TPD members and enjoy a positive and memorable event.
Member Highlight
ODM would like to commend the efforts of our Squad 9, led by Sgt. Tommy King.
In the early morning hours of September 16, 2024, 911 received a report from a resident in the 2200 block of East Ambassadors Court. The caller said that a male had broken into his home and fled when the caller confronted him. Ofc. Chase Bryan and Ofc. Dustin Sheeley were nearby when they heard the call and responded to the area quickly. They located and detained the suspect without issue and contacted the victim. The officers then checked the victim's residence to make sure no one else was inside.
Ofc. Tyler Leatherberry, who was canvassing the area, noticed an open garage door at a nearby home which he felt was suspicious. As he investigated, he discovered that this had also been victimized by the suspect. Subsequently, officers located a third victim residence and a stolen vehicle in the neighborhood.
The initial caller was so impressed by the Tucson Police Department that morning, he sent the following praise:
An intruder broke into our house at [redacted] at about 5:00 a.m. I called 911. The 911 call taker did a great job of gathering the necessary information and mobilizing officers, who arrived at our house within 3-4 minutes of me placing the call. The responding officers arrested the intruder shortly after their arrival, and they conducted what we think was a textbook example of making sure our house was clear, all the while showing bravery and keeping everyone safe.
We would also like to point out that every officer we encountered yesterday – there was ultimately a fairly large police response as more than one house in our neighborhood was hit – was wonderfully professional. I was unable to gather the names of everyone I spoke to. However, we would also like to highlight that Sergeant Thomas King (badge # 100178) was present and he, too, distinguished himself.
Had you been able to witness what we experienced yesterday, I think you would have rightly been incredibly proud of your team.
Crime Prevention Tip
Air conditioner metal theft is dangerous and frustrating.
Dangerous because people are left without cooling during dangerously hot weather and frustrating because victims' losses are so much greater than the paltry amounts thieves gain.
AC units and heat pumps are targeted for the copper they contain, which metal thieves sell to metal recyclers.
There are several ways to discourage this theft.
- Keep the unit visible by you, your neighbors, and passersby. Remove bushes or screens that would give the thief a place to hide while he works.
- If the unit is on a roof, remove any ladders that would provide access.
- Fence the property and lock the gate.
- Install a locked metal cage around the unit.
- Lock the unit's power supply with a strong lock.
- Talk to your vendor about including the unit in your alarm system.
