2024 OPERATION SPLASH AND SANDBAG DISTRIBUTION CONCLUDES
As the region’s monsoons come to an end, the Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility’s (DTM) Operation Splash initiative and sandbag distribution operations have concluded.
The self-serve sandbag distribution site, that opened in June 2024, provided an estimated 218 tons of sand, equivalent to 16,000 sandbags, to residents during this year’s thunderstorm season. This was the ninth consecutive year DTM offered sandbags as part of the Operation Splash Program. Since 2016, DTM has distributed approximately 193,200 sandbags, self-serve and prefilled combined.
This year’s monsoon brought heavy winds and damage. During the storm on July 13, 2024, 180 trees fell throughout the City of Tucson, and DTM Street Maintenance crews worked throughout the entire weekend to clear all trees and debris that were in the right of way to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
Overall, Street Maintenance staff worked about 3,000 hours during monsoon, from mid-June to mid-September, placing barricades as needed at flooded roadways, delivering sand for sandbags, clearing debris, removing large trees and sweeping roadways.
