On July 22, 2024, at approximately 3:00 p.m., officers and medics from the Tucson Fire Department were dispatched to the intersection of W. Ajo Way and S. 6th Avenue for a vehicle collision involving a motorcycle. Upon arrival, the involved parties were evaluated. The rider of a 2018 Cam-Am Spyder was transported by TFD to Banner University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other involved vehicle, a 2018 Jeep Cherokee, was not injured.
Witness interviews conducted by officers indicated that the motorcyclist was traveling eastbound on Ajo Way and attempted to turn left onto northbound 6th Ave. Once he was in the intersection, the motorcyclist was struck by the Jeep, which was traveling westbound. Officers completed their investigation and reopened the roadway. The driver of the Jeep, identified as a 36-year-old female, was issued a citation for failure to stop for a red light. Officers responded to the hospital to issue a citation to the motorcyclist. He was cited for failure to yield to traffic while making a left turn. Hospital staff notified officers that the motorcyclist’s condition had declined and he was now in life-threatening condition. Officers notified detectives from the Traffic Investigations Unit.
On July 27, 2024, Traffic Detectives were notified that the motorcyclist had passed away as a result of the injuries he sustained. He was identified as 80-year-old William Laird Ort. The investigation is ongoing and detectives will review the associated reports and evidence from the scene.
