Rio Nuevo Invests in TPD
The Rio Nuevo Board invests in development projects downtown and along the Sunshine Mile on Broadway. Its goal is to grow the tax base in partnership with private sector developers, investors, and commercial lenders.
Ensuring public safety is good for business. Recognizing that, the Rio Nuevo Board recently invested in two Can-Am Side-By-Side UTVs (Utility Task Vehicles) for the Tucson Police Department’s Downtown District, part of Operations Division West (ODW). These UTVs will be used at and around the Ronstadt Transit Center to help TPD officers cover more area in the District, as well as get through small alleyways with ease due to their compact size.
Downtown businesses welcome these two latest additions to TPD’s fleet of vehicles – and so do we!

ODW in the Community
ODW members had a blast meeting local kids at Tucson Refugee Kids Camp – and yes, the lieutenant did get his vest back ... eventually.
Also, ODW's Zebra Unit and Pima County Adult Probation’s Community Restitution Program partnered to clean up alleyways around 1st Avenue from Glenn Street south to Grant Road. These areas needed some community care and all involved did an excellent job!
Member Highlight
We would like to introduce and highlight Downtown District Community Service Officer John Walka.
John has been with the Tucson Police Department since May 2022 and just arrived here from Operations Division Midtown. In that time, John has become a CSO/FTO (Field Training Officer) and is involved in numerous community events and functions.
If John looks familiar to you, he retired from the Rural Metro Fire Department in May 2022, where he worked for 45 years and held the rank of Battalion Chief.
John has said that, before becoming a firefighter, he wanted to be a Tucson Police CSO and is enjoying the assignment very much. Thank you for your continued service to the Tucson community, CSO John Walka!

Crime Prevention Tip
If someone asks you to pay them with a gift card or gift cards, hang up, disengage - it's a scam.
Scammers are very good at pressuring people to take action before they've had a chance to think. Later, when they realize they may have made a mistake, they're often at a loss what to do.
Even if you've already given the scammer the number on the back of the card, if you act immediately, you may be able to cut down on your losses. The Federal Trade Commission has a list of contacts for gift card companies. Call them, even if the scam took place a while ago, report it, and ask for your money back. You might get lucky. Remember this option, if you hear of a friend or relative who's made this mistake.
Your first line of defense remains: never, ever, comply with anyone's demand that you pay them with gift cards.
