Please join us to celebrate the new slide at Mansfield Pool on Saturday, June 1st at 3pm! Vice Mayor Kevin Dahl will have the inaugural slide, there will be free food while it lasts, music, and the Ready, Set, Rec crew. The new, open-flume slide is 132 feet long!

The project was funded through a combination of Tucson Delivers Great Parks + Strong Connections 2018 voter-approved general obligation bonds, Ward 3 funds, and Investment Plan funds. Originally slated as a Phase 3 project (2026-2028), we were able to support the Sugar Hill Neighborhood Association in pushing the project up to Phase 2. A splash pad is still slated for Phase 3.

Last week, Ward 3 hosted the first in a series of concerts in our Ward 3 community room. Local experimental songwriters Karima Walker and Deep Stay, along with Chicago-based indy soft-rocker Advance Base shared the bill, each bringing their unique sounds to a crowd of about 20 people.
Advance Base is the solo project of Owen Ashworth, who is currently on tour with Tucson’s own Karima Walker. Deep Stay is the project of local songstress and improvisor Emily Xander. Her project sometimes includes other collaborators, but in this case was a solo performance.
Advance Base, on tour from Chicago
This was the first in a series of summer concerts that the Ward 3 office has organized for local and touring musicians. This concert series represents a rare and exciting colliding of what are often separate worlds for me. I work in the ward 3 office as a Council Aide, but for 12 years between 2008 and 2019, I was a full time touring musician who played all over North America and Europe. Having been on the road for so long myself, it’s truly a pleasure to be able to host other touring musicians.

The next show in the series, on June 6th, will feature a touring act from Sonora, California called Minor Birds, which is comprised of vocalist / pianist Chelsea Wilde and drummer Casey Chisholm. Both are musicians whose music I’ve loved for over a decade, and both have hosted shows for me in various towns around California. Local Tucson acts rounding out the bill will be Dactyls and my own group Compersion.
Dactyls is a jazz-adjacent four-piece band featuring drums, guitar, bass guitar, and saxophone. Compersion is an experimental chamber ensemble featuring marimba, violin, bass clarinet, flute, clarinet, and upright bass.

Shows in this concert series are free and open to the public. Donations for traveling musicians are welcomed but not required. If you’d like to check out the sounds of the bands playing on June 6th, just click on the names of the bands: Minor Birds, Dactyls, and Compersion.
