Like so many people our office heard from, I was outraged last fall when a few people took it upon themselves to cut down more than 75 mature trees in the City-owned Navajo Wash as an unauthorized attempt to discourage people camping there. The same people then sued us, claiming the City had created a nuisance in the wash that caused them damages, arguing that the situation was similar to “The Zone” in Phoenix. It wasn’t.

I am pleased to report that their lawsuit failed. The Court rejected the Plaintiffs’ claims and found in favor of the City on all claims. You can read the details in this article: https://tinyurl.com/3wyb6scc
More cut down trees at Navajo Wash.
Now that the lawsuit is resolved, we intend to plant more trees and additional vegetation this fall.
As for any other actions that may be taken against the perpetrators of the illegal tree destruction, the City is still weighing options on how to proceed.

Community Hope Repair Projects of Arizona (CHRPA) is a non-profit organization that assists low-income homeowners residing in Tucson and Pima County. For over 40 years the agency has offered emergency home repair services, as well as adaptive and safety modifications for individuals with disabilities. The primary objective of the organization is to improve the quality of life of the community by ensuring that every individual has access to safe and habitable housing.
Data by the numbers provided by Community Hope Repair Projects of Arizona (CHRPA)
CHRPA has been doing amazing work in Ward 3 for several years. The organization is mostly comprised of volunteers who answer the calls of residents who need repairs or maintenance on their homes but can't afford to do them. Sometimes something as simple as replacing an outlet or fixing a cooler could save a life. But, for the people without the ability or resources to do so CHRPA volunteers and their efforts are a sigh of relief.

From February to March of this year, CHRPA helped almost two dozen households in our ward. The services spanned from simple assessments to full-on repairs such as replacing shower pans and installing grab bars for a resident in their 80s. All of the clients that CHRPA helped out are below 51% of the current Area Median Income (AMI) of $44,750 a year for a one-person household, in Pima County. This puts CHRPA’s clients’ annual earnings at less than $22,000 a year, which is considered “very low-income” by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Almost three-quarters of the people served have a disability which makes most of the work that CHRPA does accessibility projects.
Our office firmly believes in the work that CHRPA is doing in our community and has contributed funds to support their work in helping others. If you would like to support their efforts please click on the button below to donate.

 BIXY /ID# A830183 Age: 3 years
Qualities: Beautiful girl Bixy is a sweet, sensitive girl who is nervous in the shelter - and who can blame her? However, since arriving, she's opened up so much with our staff and volunteers, showing us more and more personality and affection each day. While she can be shy at first, these days she's rolling over for belly rubs, leaning in for snuggles, and making us laugh with her playful antics. Bixy is a good friend to other dogs and does well in our playgroups, and she would likely benefit from a calm, confident buddy in her future home to show her the ropes. Come meet this special girl at PACC today!

GRANT ROAD – ALVERNON WAY TO SWAN ROAD IMPROVEMENT PROJECT PHASE 3-4
CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN
The Grant Road Improvement Project from Alvernon Way to Swan Road (Sparkman Boulevard to Venice Place) is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 20, 2024. Granite Construction, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility, will begin this project on the west end of the limits, at Sparkman Boulevard and proceed east.
To minimize the impact to the traveling public, this first phase of work, which includes relocating underground utilities, will take place at night, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Lane restrictions will be in place during this work.
At completion, this improvement project will include six travel lanes, landscaped medians, buffered bike lanes, sidewalks, transit stop upgrades, indirect left turns and protected intersection improvements at Alvernon Way and Grant Road. A 96-inch diameter underground storm drain system will also be constructed throughout the project limits. This project is expected to be complete by the end of 2026.
