On April 3, 2024, shortly after 6:15 p.m., officers from Operations Division South and personnel from the Tucson Fire Department responded to East 22nd Street and South Herbert Avenue for reports of a collision involving a silver 2015 Ford Focus and an adult male pedestrian. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. His name is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
Detectives from the Traffic Investigations Unit responded to the scene to continue the investigation. After conducting interviews and evaluating roadway evidence, detectives determined that the pedestrian was attempting to cross E. 22nd St. from north to south when he was struck by the Ford Focus that was traveling westbound on E. 22nd St. in the curb lane. The pedestrian was not in a marked, or unmarked, crosswalk when the collision occurred. Additionally, detectives were informed that sun glare for westbound travel was an issue at the time of the collision.
An officer from the Impaired Driver Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and evaluated the driver for impairment. It was determined that the driver was not impaired by alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision.
Midblock crossing by the pedestrian and environmental conditions are the primary contributing factors of the collision.
This remains an ongoing investigation and no charges or citations have been issued at this time.
