FATAL PEDESTRIAN COLLISION WEST IRVINGTON ROAD AND SOUTH 9TH AVENUE |
On March 28, 2024, just before 9:00 p.m., officers from Operations Division South responded to the area of W. Irvington Rd. and S. 9th Avenue for the report of a serious-injury collision involving a pedestrian. Tucson Fire Department personnel also responded to the scene and evaluated the involved parties. The pedestrian, identified as a 48-year-old female, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Traffic Detectives were notified and continued the investigation.
Interviews conducted by officers and detectives, in conjunction with roadway evidence, determined that the pedestrian was trying to cross Irvington Rd. from north to south when she was struck by a westbound 2020 Dodge Ram. The pedestrian was in an unmarked crosswalk on the west side of the intersection. The east side of the intersection has a HAWK beacon and marked crosswalk, which was not utilized. Witnesses described the pedestrian running into and across the roadway. The driver of the Ram, identified as a 31-year-old female, immediately stopped after the collision and cooperated with the investigation. An officer from the DUI Unit responded to the scene and determined that the driver was not impaired. Any alcohol and or drugs within the pedestrian may be determined through medical records.
Detectives believe that the unsafe movement into the roadway and not utilizing traffic control devices by the pedestrian are the major contributing factors in the collision. The investigation is ongoing and no charges or citations have been issued. The pedestrian’s identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
