Letter from Council Member Fimbres
Dear Friends,
Sunday, March 31st is the day when we honor and celebrate the legacy of César E. Chavez. He was a true hero and a champion of nonviolent social change, and a crusader for the environment and consumer rights.
Ten years ago or governmental entity in Arizona to have a paid holiday and a day of service that honors Civil Rights leader, César Chavez. I would like to thank my colleagues who made this possible: then Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, then Council Member Shirley Scott, then Council Member Karin Uhlich, Regina Romero, Steve Kozachik and Paul Cunningham on the Council and the many organizations who joined me in support for the City of Tucson true César Chavez holiday in 2014.
Let us together continue to honor the great legacy of César Chavez; whose selfless dedication for farm worker and worker rights, economic justice, civil rights, environmental justice, peace, nonviolence, empowerment of the poor and disenfranchised, continues to inspire all and the generations to come. His example has led people to become involved in all the causes, which continue to make an impact in our community.
|
He lived an extraordinary life of helping those who needed a voice and was a role model to all. We can live together by his example, to make Tucson a community we can continue to be proud of. “Si Se Puede!” , my colleagues and I voted to make the City of Tucson the first city
“When you have people together who believe in something very strongly, whether it’s religion or politics or unions, things happen.” César E. Chavez
Sincerely,

Congratulations Xochitl Coronado-Vargas and Amanda Jones!
The Ward 5 Council Office would like to congratulate Xochitl Coronado-Vargas and Amanda Jones on being recipients of the 2024 Emerging Leader Awards. This award recognizes exceptional leaders who work to advance innovative, sustainable, equitable, and climate resilient water solutions in their communities.
Xochitl is the Public Information Coordinator for Tucson Water. She was nominated by Silvia Amparano, who is the Deputy Director of Tucson Water. She and Amanda Jones, who is the Project Manager for Tucson Water, have been developing an equity analysis of existing processes and practices within Tucson Water.
|
Upon completion of this analysis, they made several recommendations on process modifications that would result in more equitable practices at Tucson Water. In addition to this analysis, Xochitl has been advocating for the creation of a more equitable distribution of investment of green stormwater infrastructure throughout the city.
Although she is very much honored to have received this award, what Xochitl is looking to see the most is “processes and practices change throughout the city so that we as local government have a robust roadmap for how to ensure we are meeting the needs of the most vulnerable communities among us.” We are very proud of Xochitl and Amanda!

Elephant Calf Born at Reid Park Zoo
Welcome baby! We are excited to announce that Semba, the Zoo’s African elephant matriarch, gave birth to a 265-pound calf Friday, March 8 at 3:31 a.m. The calf, whose sex has not yet been determined, is standing, sticking close to mom, and nursing enthusiastically.
The new calf expands the Zoo’s elephant herd to five, joining Semba, big sisters Nandi and Penzi, and allomother Lungile. The calf is the third African elephant calf born at Reid Park Zoo. Nandi has shown significant interest in spending time with her new youngest sibling.
This new calf will join the other members of the herd in being an ambassador for their species in the wild. Every guest who visits the Zoo plays a part in protecting elephants in the wild, assisting Reid Park Zoo’s support of the Tarangire Conservation Research Program which has conserved over a million acres of elephant habitat in Africa. The Zoo also participates in the African elephant Species Survival Plan and contributes to global research in elephant care, as well as the study and mitigation of the virus known as EEHV.
