FATAL VEHICLE COLLISION (DELAYED) WEST IRVINGTON ROAD AND SOUTH CALLE SANTA CRUZ |
On March 11, 2024, just after 12:30 p.m., officers from Operations Division South along with Tucson Fire Department Medics were dispatched to a two-vehicle collision at W. Irvington Rd. and S. Calle Santa Cruz. Upon arrival, TFD transported the driver of a grey Buick SUV to Banner University Medical Center South with life-threatening injuries. Additionally, the passenger of the other involved vehicle, a Chevrolet SUV, was also transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was identified as a 77-year-old female.
Witness interviews conducted by officers indicated that the Buick was traveling eastbound on Irvington Rd. attempting to make a left turn onto Calle Santa Cruz. While the Buick was negotiating the turn, it was struck by the Chevrolet, which was traveling westbound on Irvington Rd. in the median lane. There was no indication that either driver was impaired. Prior to clearing the scene, patrol officers issued the driver of the Buick a citation for failure to yield while making a left turn.
On March 27th, the Tucson Police Department was notified by the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner that the driver from the Buick had passed away in the hospital as a result of her injuries. Police identified the driver as 78-year-old Kathleen Dianne Swanston. Family for Ms. Swanston was aware of the collision and her subsequent passing. TPD Traffic Detectives are now reviewing the associated reports and evidence to determine if there are any other applicable charges or citations.
