The Tucson Police Department is actively investigating a fatal shooting that happened yesterday afternoon on Tucson’s East side near the William M. Clements Center.
On January 26, 2024, at approximately 2:00 p.m., patrol officers from Operations Division East were dispatched to the report of a shooting victim found in the 8100 block of E. Poinciana Dr. Upon arrival, officers located the victim with gunshot trauma and immediately began rendering aid, including CPR. Tucson Fire Department personnel arrived and transported the victim to St. Joseph’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officers located witnesses and secured the scene, to include the victim’s vehicle, which came to rest after striking a nearby building. Detectives from TPD’s Aggravated Assault and Homicide Units responded to the scene and continued the investigation.
Investigators reviewed witness statements and forensic evidence from the scene. Additionally, a search warrant was obtained and served on the victim’s vehicle. Detectives were able to determine that the victim was driving a black Dodge Challenger on Poinciana Dr. when he was approached by an unknown group. Gunshots were fired after which the group fled the area, and the victim drove to a large parking lot where his vehicle struck the building. Several hours later, just after 9:30 p.m., the victim died from his injuries; he was identified as 23-year-old Devon Sullivan Thompson. The suspects and motive remain unknown.
Homicide Detectives have taken over the investigation and are working with officers from Operations Division East/Community Response Team. Police are actively pursuing leads and are asking anyone with information to call 9-1-1 or 88-CRIME–you can remain anonymous. Additional updates will be provided as they become available.
