|
On March 12, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., officers from the Westside Division and Tucson Fire Department Medics were dispatched to the intersection of N. 1st Ave. and E. Jacinto Street for the report of a collision involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, the involved pedestrian was pronounced deceased. He was identified as a 58-year-old male. According to interviews conducted by officers and detectives, the pedestrian was attempting to cross 1st Ave. at Jacinto in an unknown direction when he was struck by a black 2014 BMW sedan. The sedan had been traveling southbound on 1st Ave. in the median lane. The driver of the BMW, identified as a 21-year-old male, immediately stopped after the crash and cooperated with the investigation. An officer from the Impaired Driving Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and evaluated the driver for impairment. It was determined that he was not impaired at the time of the collision, any impairment within the pedestrian will be determined through medical records.
Failure to yield to a pedestrian in an unmarked crosswalk and speeding are the major contributing factors in the collision and charges are currently pending.
