FATAL MOTORCYCLE COLLISION (DELAYED) SOUTH PALO VERDE ROAD AND EAST VALENCIA ROAD |
On the morning of March 6, 2024, officers from Operations Division South responded to the intersection of S. Palo Verde Rd. and E. Valencia Rd. for a serious-injury collision involving a motorcyclist. Officers and members of the Tucson Fire Department arrived to the scene and evaluated the involved parties. The rider of the motorcycle was transported to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Moments after arriving at the hospital, his injuries were no longer considered life threatening. Police identified a 74-year-old female as the driver of the other involved vehicle, a Mitsubishi Outlander, and she was not injured.
Witness interviews conducted by officers in conjunction with roadway evidence indicated that the Mitsubishi was eastbound on Valencia Rd. attempting to make a left turn onto northbound Palo Verde. As the Mitsubishi was turning, the westbound motorcyclist collided into it. Several witnesses indicated that the motorcyclist was traveling well above the posted speed limit of 45 MPH as he traveled across all lanes of westbound traffic around slower vehicles. There was no indication at the scene that the motorcyclist was impaired at the time of the collision. The motorcyclist had the proper motorcycle endorsement associated with his driver’s license.
On March 12, 2024, the Tucson Police Department received notification from the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner that the motorcyclist passed away in the hospital as a result of his injuries. He was identified as 21-year-old Nicholas Benjamin Kershaw. Next of kin was notified. The investigation remains on going and speeding by Mr. Kershaw is the major contributing factor of the collision.
