FATAL VEHICLE COLLISION SOUTH 6TH AVENUE AND WEST AJO WAY |
On March 5, 2024, at approximately 3:00 a.m., officers from Operations Division South located a Toyota pickup that collided into a sign on the northwest corner of 6th Avenue and Ajo Way. Officers removed the driver from the vehicle and summoned Tucson Fire Department Medics. Upon arrival, TFD pronounced the driver deceased at the scene. Police identified the driver as 66-year-old William Charles Carter. Next of kin was notified. Traffic Detectives were contacted and responded to continue the investigation.
The initial investigation determined that Mr. Carter was traveling westbound on Ajo Way when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with the sign on the northwest corner of the intersection. Investigators determined that drugs were in the driver’s system prior to the collision and found that he was not wearing his seatbelt.
Failure to control or reduce speed is the major contributing factor; however, it is unknown if the drugs in Mr. Carter’s system or a medical issue contributed to the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.
