On Tuesday, January 30, 2024, shortly before 6:30 p.m., officers from Operations Division South and personnel from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the area of South Park Avenue and the Eastbound I-10 entrance ramp for reports of a collision involving a white 2016 GMC Sierra and a black 2006 Honda VTX1300 motorcycle. The motorcyclist, 49-year-old Nicholas Steven Kazmar, was transported to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. After arriving at the hospital, Mr. Kazmar passed away from his injuries. Next of kin has been notified of his passing.
Detectives from the Traffic Investigations Unit responded to the scene to continue the investigation. After conducting interviews and evaluating roadway evidence, detectives determined that the GMC Sierra was traveling southbound on S. Park Ave. attempting to make a left turn on to the eastbound I-10 ramp when it collided with Mr. Kazmar, who was riding northbound on S. Park Ave. in the curb lane.
The driver of the GMC Sierra, identified as 21-year-old Adrian Chavez, stopped after the collision and cooperated with the investigation. An officer from the Impaired Driver Enforcement Unit responded to the scene, evaluated Mr. Chavez, and determined he was not impaired by alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision.
Failure to yield while making a left turn at an intersection by Mr. Chavez is the major contributing factor of the collision. At the time of the collision, Mr. Kazmar was not wearing his helmet. Drugs and alcohol were located in Mr. Kazmar’s motorcycle; however, it is currently unknown if alcohol or drugs were present in his system until medical records are reviewed.
Mr. Chavez was arrested for Causing Death by a Moving Violation. No booking photograph is available as he was cited and released. The investigation remains ongoing.
