On Tuesday, January 30, 2024, shortly after 6:30 a.m., officers from Operations Division South and personnel from the Tucson Fire Department responded to East 22nd Street and South Park Avenue for reports of a collision involving a white 2014 Dodge Charger and an adult-female pedestrian. The pedestrian, 46-year-old Sarah Marie Chavez, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Next of kin has been notified of her passing.
Detectives from the Traffic Investigations Unit responded to the scene to continue the investigation. After conducting interviews and evaluating roadway evidence, detectives determined that Ms. Chavez was attempting to cross E. 22nd St. from south to north when she was struck by the Dodge Charger that was traveling westbound on E. 22nd St. in excess of the posted 30 mph nighttime speed limit. Ms. Chavez was in a marked crosswalk; however, she crossed against the signal and the traffic light was green for eastbound and westbound traffic on E. 22nd St.
The driver of the Dodge Charger stopped and cooperated with the investigation. An officer from the Impaired Driver Enforcement Unit evaluated the driver of the Charger and determined he was not impaired by alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision.
Ms. Chavez crossing against the signal is the main contributing factor of the collision; however, the speed of the Dodge Charger is the focus of the investigation. Additionally, the driver of the Dodge Charger did not have a valid driver’s license.
This is an ongoing investigation and no citations or charges have been issued at this time.
