On January 29, 2024, shortly before 6:30 a.m., officers from Operations Division Midtown and personnel from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the 2600 block of North Alvernon Way for reports of a collision involving a white 2011 Dodge Avenger and an adult-male pedestrian. The pedestrian, 55-year-old Michael Akowski, was transported to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Mr. Akowski passed away from his injuries. Next of kin has been notified of his passing.
Detectives from the Traffic Investigations Unit responded to the scene to continue the investigation. After conducting interviews and evaluating roadway evidence, detectives determined that Mr. Akowski was crossing N. Alvernon Wy. from west to east when he was struck by the Dodge Avenger that was traling northbound on N. Alvernon Wy. in the curb lane. Mr. Akowski was mid-block crossing and was not in a marked or unmarked crosswalk. Narcotic paraphernalia was found in Mr. Akowski’s possession; however, it is unknown if he was impaired by alcohol and/or drugs.
An officer from the Impaired Driver Enforcement Unit responded and evaluated the driver of the Dodge Avenger. It was determined that the driver was not impaired by alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision.
Mid-block crossing by Mr. Akowski is the major contributing factor of the collision.
This remains an ongoing investigation and no citations or charges have been issued at this time.
