On the night of January 17, 2024, the Public Safety Communication Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting a shooting and unresponsive male located at Manuel Herrera Jr. Park on S. Fiesta Avenue. Patrol officers from Tucson’s Southside were dispatched to the park and arrived just after 7:15 p.m. Officers located the male victim seated in a vehicle and immediately began rendering aid with the use of their first aid kits until Tucson Fire Department Medics arrived. TFD took over life-saving efforts and ultimately transported the victim to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Detectives from the Narcotic Violent Crime Unit and the Homicide Unit responded to the scene and continued the investigation.
Through interviews and evidence found at the scene, detectives learned that the victim was at the park for a pre-planned transaction with an unknown party. During the transaction, a brief confrontation ensued which lead to the victim being shot. The suspect then fled the area in a vehicle prior to police arrival.
The victim remained in the hospital until January 19, 2024, when Homicide Detectives were notified that the victim had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The victim was identified as 18-year-old Daniel Anthony Arriaga. Next of kin was notified. As detectives continued their investigation, they obtained additional forensic evidence, which led them to identify 17-year-old Derick Ivan Hernandez Burruel as the suspect. On January 24th, TPD Homicide Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect for one count of 1st Degree Murder and one count of Attempted Robbery. That same day officers assigned to the Southside Community Response Team located Burruel near E. Bilby Road. TPD SWAT and CRT officers executed a search warrant and took Burruel into custody. Investigators briefly contacted Burruel before he was transported and booked into the Pima County Jail. He is currently being held on his warrant on a $1,000,000 bond.
The investigation remains ongoing and detectives are asking anyone with information to call 88-CRIME, you can remain anonymous.
