Street Racing/Takeovers, Car Meetups
In December, Operations Division East continued to work on the problem of street racing, car meetups, and street takeovers. We conducted one deployment and noted little street racing/takeover activity.
In addition to this deployment, we worked with business owners to make their properties less appealing to individuals who access their parking lots after hours–or break into warehouses–and perform burnouts, causing damage. These crime prevention measures have included:
- Having a signed no-trespass letter on file with TPD
- Fencing their property and controlling access to the property with gates
- Improving lighting, to increase the likelihood that people on the property can been seen from the street
- Adding cameras with motion sensors, so the property can be monitored after hours
- Locking access to warehouse buildings
Below is a recap of our 2023 enforcement action on street racing/takeover deployments:
- Traffic stops – 376
- Speeding citations – 168
- Verbal/Written warnings – 83
- Racing – 23
- Vehicle impounds – 23
- DUI (felony) – 4
- DUI (misdemeanor) – 2
- Other civil violations – 59
- Felony warrants – 2
- Guns recovered – 3

ODE in the Community
In December, Operations Division East members participated in six community events, including the annual holiday share event at Palo Verde High School, a toy give-away for families in the Dietz Neighborhood, and an event at Harold Steele Elementary School, teaching students about forensic science.

Member Highlight
Operations Division East would like to recognize the hard work and efforts of Officers Katherine “Kat” Hofmann and Nicholas “Nick” Oliver.
Kat and Nick have been ODE’s school liaison officers for the past year and they have done a fantastic job connecting with students, staff members, and parents.
Kat and Nick have done numerous training classes for staff and students on personal safety. They have worked to create positive relationships, so students can feel more at ease around police officers. Finally, in November, Kat and Nick collected over 400 gently used children books to distribute to students at Irene Erickson Elementary School. Each child received two books and chocolate chip cookies.

Crime Prevention Tip
According to the Federal Trade Commission, investment fraud is the costliest type of fraud, costing American consumers more than $3.8 billion in 2022.
The Securities and Exchange Commission lists 13 common types of investor fraud on its page Investor.gov, along with ways to avoid fraud.
One red flag I'm sure you've heard before: "If it sounds too good to be true, it is." Another is a guarantee of high returns. High returns are never guaranteed.
It can be difficult to know where to report investment fraud. You have several options:
Report precious metals or commodities fraud to:
